Post subject:  Dual pickups are there any advantages?

In searching around for parts for my truck I see that Mopar used dual pickup distributor coils in the 80's. My question is there any performance or fuel mileage gain I could get from this? Or are these not compatible to the non-lean burn engines of the 70's like mine? Sam

The 1981-1987 ESC distributors do not have a mechanical advance mechanism, the first pick up allows the engine to use a 10 degree retarded setting for starting then switches to the second pickup used while the engine is running, advance is then dealt with by the ESC/Lean Burn system.
The pickup plate is fixed and does not have the capability to allow a vacuum advance to be installed either.

The reason for the need for dual points in the 'old days' was to prevent points bounce or firing issues at high rpms...with the EI pickup being much more accurate and the lack of 'moving' parts (i.e a rubbing block on the govenor), better dwell being managed by the EI module and more accurate timing and advance can occur.

Oh, ok DI thanks for the info I'm not familiar with the newer slants. I knew there had to be some reason had never read any discussion in any of the distributor threads I've seen.
