Post subject:  Recommendation for floor shifter for 904.

I need to buy a floor shifter for the 904. The column shift has been gone for years. I want the indicator on the gear selector to line up correctly when the trans is in a gear. I would like it to to have a lock out for reverse. I want it to feel solid. It is not for racing, but for driving cruising. Since I am planing a Gear Vendors OD unit, a unit with a built in contact button on the handle would be handy.

Is this any good? Over priced? http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp ... Assigned=1

How about this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/B-M-Hammer-Shif ... 7b&vxp=mtr

Pros and cons here? I see them listed for prices from around $130 to $250. That seems like a wide range. What are the advantages for more money? Is there a cheaper one which will look OK, not feel cheap, and do the job? What brand and model did you buy, and do you like it? If not why?

Edit: I take that back. I found some for over $500! I'm not going to beat on this. It does not have to be slam shifted.

Thanks. Sam

Unless someone gives me good reason not to do it, I am ordering a Hurst Pro matic 2 tomorrow for $200 from Jegs. It has a park engage lock, which is a must feature for me since there is not parking brake right now. It also has a reverse lock out, which is a must. I am open to advice from those with experience. I like the sequential motion to shift gears, so you can shift through the gears if you want without fear of over shooting the next gear.

Sam- Have you looked at LOKAR? Completely different look from Hurst and B&M, but it is hard linkage and some(the one I am installing) mount to the transmission for a more positive (solid)feel. I have had them on GM cars before, and was very happy with them.

Thanks Dan. That looks like great stuff, and I may go that way eventually after the project is installed, working and I am feeling prosperous. It is about $100 more than the shifters I was looking at originally, so it would really be feature creep in a big way. I think the Lokar approach is especially nice for guys doing the retro look on street rods, as it looks just like the old shifter levers that came up out of the tunnel on the 30's autos.

For now I am still leaning towards the Hurst Auto Pro. I was also looking at the B&M hammer shifter, but read a review when it got locked up and the owner had to crawl under the car to get it working.

EDIT: Read more reviews and watched videos of units in operation, and now think I will get the B&M Quicksilver.

Sam, I am pretty sure that Ryan has one of these in the Slantkota truck he got from Lou if you want his opinion on it. I have driven it and don't personally care for the way you have to lift up and push down the handle coming out of Park into reverse and from D to reverse. But that is just me. Once I would get used to it, it would probably be fine. They look nice.

I like the B & M pro ratchet I got form Slantzilla, but it may not look as "pretty" in a luxury car like yours. It ratchets to and from every gear , with an external reverse lock out.

Sam I use the B+M Pro Ratchet Shifter(Summit # BBM-80842) in 3 different cars and it is my favorite. It can be used in forward or reverse shift patterens and also 3 and 4 speeds if you ever want to go to a AOD such as 200R4 or a mopar 518 /500. Easy to install and use.Never had any problems. I had the Hurst Pro-matic 2 in another project and wasn't to happy with the way it worked. Just my 2 bits(can't get much for 2 cents anymore.)!
OR if you want something for under 100 bucks lookup Mr.Gasket universal shifter. I just installed one in a project and don't know how good it will be as the car isn't up and running yet. It may get canned for the B+M as this car has a forward manual valve body. I think it will work fine for a put it in drive self shifting valve body.I'll find out soon enough...

Generally, reviewers on line are agreeing that the B&M products are a little more refined, and a little stouter than the Hurst, even though, or maybe because, B& M now owns Hurst.
