Can anyone tell me why so many, I have ( guessing ) at least three notches that can be confused for timing marks. 1986 engine Also can someone tell me why the gauge ( steel timing marker plate that is mounted to the timing cover ) has a round tube on the end, hole down the center Have a nice Christmas Thanks |

Factory tuning required a probe to be installed in the tube and a long procedure to check the timing of the engine. For you the timing can be set with the "0" on the tab and a timing light. This timing cover has been around since the 1979 model year.-D.Idiot |

No sense,,,,no help...... Just a reference to a song from long ago.... Try this: If someone was valve timing they might mark the flywheel for the 3 TDC points. You would still need to know where the marks were referenced to. |

The flywheel attaches to the back of the crankshaft and holds the clutch...the little pulley style wheel at the front of the engine is the damper (or some refer to it as the harmonic balancer - typically in engines that have not had the crankshaft balanced...i.e. some V-8 engines like the 360) -D.idiot |

Are they about 120 degrees apart? I make notches like that for being able to turn motor to set valves. Richard |

To set the valve lash on pre-1980 engines that had solid lifters. |

True maybe the balancer came off such a motor. Richard |

Could they have used that pre-1980 dampner on this 1986 engine originally? Seems highly un-likely, I have been wondering why my spare engine ( 1984 which I feel was un-touched, lower mileage and not abused ) has a different dampner on it. The one on their now looks much heavier, I will have too take some pictures now for you guys too see. Thanks for the info |

I have a 1983 heavy duty truck slant six (I removed it from a 1983 D-150 NP435 truck), it's never been apart in it's life and it has that style of damper. I had another one from a 1981 D-150 I kept as a souvenir until I dropped it and it cracked in half. These are for heavy duty use (i.e. D-150 and industrial slants)Quote: Seems highly un-likely, I have been wondering why my spare engine ( 1984 which I feel was un-touched, lower mileage and not abused ) has a different dampner on it.
Different build, I'd bet that slant was either in front of an automatic or had the A-833OD behind it...of course quality control after the mid 70's was always an issue and you could end up with a HD engine in a gas miser truck because the union assembler just grabbed the next engine and dropped it under the hood and moved on...-D.Idiot |
