Post subject:  Distributor and timing screw up.

Ok so i tried messing with the timing by adjusting the dizzy. Since i was getting low mileage. Heres what happened i removed the screw underneath the distributor so i could adjust it more. I had to remove the fuel filter to get to the screw. Now the problem was that somehow i lost the timing and when i tried starting the car it just wouldnt go. Because of the holidays i couldnt work on it so i had to let it sit. That brings me to today. I figured i would set the timing from scratch and so i set the dampner to 8.5 btdc but before checked if the mark was at tdc and it was. Then i tried what was suggested in another post which was remove the plug from coil to distributor and put it close to ground and then i rotated the distributor until i got a strong spark. I set it to that tightened everything but no go. Is there something i missed?

My phone won't play the video so I can't hear it... When you set it to TDC did you make sure it was on compression stroke? The mark will line up twice for every one rotation of the cam. The dizzy spins at the same rate of the cam and not the crank.

My slant sounded like that too when I had to timing too far off.....just make sure you use the right timing mark and are on the compression stroke of the #1 cylinder.....

On my 78 it actually has three :shock: that was confusing first time I noticed lol.

So since its set up on the wrong stroke . Do i turn it by hand one full turn and then find timing?

My marks had me a little confused, but the piston stop tool used on the #1 piston will show you TDC. That lined up with the mark on the degree tab will get you timed and running.....I also had to loosen up the bottom bolt on my distributor to get my timing where it needed to be.... :D

A better way: if it's a mech. lifter slant (pre 1981)...the way you can tell if you are on the compression stroke is to pull the valve cover (or on the 70's covers pull the oil cap), and wiggle both of the rocker arms for the #1 cylinder...if it's TDC but both rockers are tight/rigid you aren't on compression...if you can wiggle them easily back and forth on the shaft then you are on the compression stroke (the rockers are loose because the lifter is on the base circle of the cam, not on a lobe ramp, leaving the valve 100% closed and no tension on the pushrod or rocker...i.e. loose by the amount of your lash).

Set it to TDC that way, then it should fire right up...then reset it the same way, then dial in your static start at 5BTDC and work up to the 8 BTDC, and see how that goes.
