I want to replace my axle tubes because they're missing a good bit of material all the way around. Now, I don't want to replace the whole axle but I want new springs. I feel like unless I take care of the axle tubes too, springs aren't worth it.

The tubes are welded to the differential housing. While it's possible to drill out the large plug welds retaining the tubes in the housing and to cut the housing ends from the tubes a jig is required to hold everything in alignment when it's all welded back together. If the tubes aren't collapsing from the clamping force of the u-bolts I wouldn't bother, especially if it's a 7.25" axle.

I guess so. Well in the future I want to supe up the 225 say 160hp, add manual discs, and hd suspension w/sway bar, so I guess I should wait for a 489 w/ a 3.23 SG.

An 8 3/4 is overkill unless you are drag racing with a manual transmission. 8 1/4s are fine. Ford 8" axles are pretty good too. If the 7 1/4 had a decent differential case it would be a much better axle.
