my great-niece's father is interested in a 75 dart sport coupe. found it on craigslist for $2500, the guy sounded nice on the phone and volunteered that he had to have 2300 for it. it does have some lower quarter panel cancer; he says trunk and floors are good, we are planning to drive out to look at it today. the car has a slant. he says it runs and drives but he would not trust it to go anywhere (dirty fuel tank). my 75 valiant was a similar deal (except it did NOT run and had sat under a tree for 4 years), and i have had a lot fun fixing it up. granted, it's a four door hobby car and will never be worth much of anything, but i love it and i got it for $450 bucks. i give this background because i do know how to tell if a car is worth saving. my question is, if the car is worth saving, is it worth the money? it's definitely a much sportier looking car than my trusty valiant. the seller horrified me with telling me how all the lookers were wanting to stuff a v8 into it. i assured him that the slant is a satisfactory engine, and i think it may have actually made him want to sell it to us a little bit more. there's something about hearing, "i love you just the way you are" versus "gee, you'd be great with some plastic surgery!" are dart sport coupes more or less valuable than dusters, or no difference? does being a 75 hurt? i know you guys have more experience with this kind of thing than i do, and i also realize that market values will vary with location. mopars do pretty well around here, much better than in the past. |

edit: cancer in quarter panels AND trunk. floors and doors supposed to be good. FWIW, i've had to do the trunk on my valiant (along with cleaning the gas tank), so at least i know what i'm getting into there. little money, a bit of tinkering time. i have friends who weld, and scrap metal for patching is usually free. |

Sounds like a lot of money for a car that needs a ton of work. Ask yourself, if all these other guys have passed on it, what's wrong? Check the front floors, front frame horns, and the area around the rear spring hangers for rust. Seriously? Sounds like a money pit to me. |

They are about the same price, but because of the extra "stuff" that makes them a Dart front end than a Duster front end, and that Dodge tended toward luxury items more than Plymouth, they tend to be a little heavier than the plymouth counterpart in the last years of the A-body... Cancer is ugly and a project killer...I can tell you that the price of the car as sold vs. what your insurance values it at will be very different....(my insurance values my '76 at around $4900 because they made very few of them and it has the feather duster package...even though it's a #3/4 per the blue book). Technically a daily driver "late" duster/ dart sport with little or no cancer goes for about $1800-2200 in this area of the country...price goes up from there if it is a real interesting car (i.e. "H" code 340 car...etc...)-D.Idiot |

I'd pass on it unless the interior is pristine. It all depends on what it's worth to you. You'll never get your money out of it if you fix it up nicely. Dart Sports generally don't have the resale value of Dusters from what I've seen. I personally wouldn't pay more than $1200 for a Dart Sport with quarter panel rust and even then there better be something real nice about the car that I like. Otherwise I'd keep looking. |
