Post subject:  Extra part in Kee Industries convertible top

I think I got the kit (some time ago) from Classic Industries made by Kee, for a 67 Barracuda including glass window. It has an extra strip about five feet long, made of a roll of material around a rope core. Has anyone installed one of these tops, and what is the extra thingie for?

Yup. I installed the top on my LeBaron a while back.

That long strip of top fabric is wrapped around the rope and stitched to make what I’m calling “Pipingâ€￾. Once made up, that rounded edge is fit to the leading edge of top between top edge of windshield and underside of top making a filler. The piping is stapled to the underside front bow, and its ends are folded back and stapled to make a finished look.

You will need to find an upholstery shop to do the stitching with the proper gage thread and sewing machine to make nice tight piping.

I would send a photo, but I left my camera at son’s house 45 minutes away last weekend.

When you disassemble the old top, take lots of pictures, measure distance between bows, and the most critical dimension being from trunk deck to center of last bow over rear window; write it all down. Make sure you get that rear bow dimension or the top won’t install correctly. I would recommend renting a DIY video for this project, and check on line for written instructions, and read until it all makes sense…

Also be sure to replace the tack strip, the stuff the staples bit into on the bows. Use an air powered stapler, hand and electric staple guns don’t have enough fire power to fully set a staple on this job in new tack strip. Replace the padding, but measure bow spacing before removing old pads.

OK, great. Thanks for all the info!

I replaced a top on my 66 years and years ago, vague recollection.

The other thing I found helpful is to always work from the centerline out, to avoid wrinkles
