To start, for those who dont know, I have a 1978 Volare Wagon. Factory Super Six car, A904, an 8.25" out back, and a Carter BBD on top...

So the choke "works", and by that I mean if its cold you turn the key hit the gas pedal and it closes. Engine fires right up and rpm picks up off the high idle can with no issues... HOWEVER, there is only on or off with this thing, there is no inbetween and it does not gradually close. As soon as the gas pedal gets touched it kicks the choke off irregardless of engine temps, and it kicks it ALL the way off...

My question is what can be done about this? Is it a matter of a bad choke thermostat? There is also a small device (I have no idea what it is) that mounts to the head is about the diameter of a quarter and has to flat terminals on it. The power for the choke connects to one pin, and the other goes to the thermostat mounted on the exhaust manifold... Could this be bad and not holding the choke closed long enough?

Sorry if my question doesnt make sense, but to be honest this is the first carbureted car I have ever owned that I gave a crap that the choke works right. But the slant doesnt run at all when it is real cold and would be nice to have it fuction correctly if thats even possible... Thanks in advance everyone

Understand! and no problem....a couple of things.....

First step: your choke pull off needs to be adjusted so it doesn't yank the choke back all the way. Sometimes folks squeeze the gap in the loop shut. Look at the manual in the FAQ for the correct distance. If it is ok, still a good gap in the loop....then do the next step.

Next step: if your choke spring is weak it may not provide adequate tension. You may have to adjust the shaft to increase the spring rate of the chokes bi-metal spring. It is very easy to adjust with a large flat blade screw driver. If it is rusty looking spray a little PB Blaster on the shaft.

The pull off and choke spring balance each other as the engine warms up to were the pull off wins....in the end when everything warms up.
So you may have to crank up the spring rate of the choke a little. I usually only go about and 1/8th of a turn at a time to increase tension.

I have mine adjusted so the choke kicks off about two miles from the house. It is well on its way to getting up to temp by then.

Awsome thanks Ted! Ill measure the gap, but I've never adjusted it so who knows what its at. I have a feeling its going to be the spring tension though. I didn't know it was adjustable.
