I'm replacing the single-pot master cylinder on my '63 Dart wagon with the two-pot Raybestos as a safety upgrade.

Four years ago, I put a brand new single-pot master cylinder on, and it was squeaky clean and rust-free on the outside. You'd never know it today: now it looks rusty and old.

How do people here who have show cars keep the cast-iron outside of your master cylinder from rusting? Is there a spray or sealant you can apply to keep it looking 'metal' instead of 'rust'? I had no idea the outside of the MC would rust like this one did. Don't want the new one I'm about to install to look the same way in some years.

Not sure if you'll find any coating that's brake fluid proof. Eastwood has some cast iron paint - its very thin that you rub in similar to varnish on wood. Could just wax it - that'd be easier to touch up. WD40 ?

Otherwise - get a modern aluminum unit with the 2 > 4 bolt adapter and call it a day

Not sure, but you could paint it, and use DOT 5 brake fluid, but that opens up other issues.

If you're starting with a fresh unit, the only thing I could think of would be to strip it, the use a powder coat (eastwood) on the outside, or maybe a catylized expoxy paint. Then reassemble.

Then it's standard (and typical) for master cylinders to become rusty on the outside?

Do the guys who show their cars just wire brush it up before a show or something?

2 cents here i just use por grey exhaust manifold high heat paint

this way they both match & very easy to touch up every once in awhile.

I have a friend that drives an unpainted rat rod 1952 chopped channeled shaved sectioned Chevy wagon rain or shine that one can see all the welds in the fresh looking steel. I had to ask how it stays rust free; answer tire shine, a few coats a year. It should work on a clean master cylinder.

The Eastwood paint works good, just be sure to clean whatever you paint VERY WELL, with mineral spirits or kerosene to get off any oily film.
