Post subject:  disk brake conversion

Hi I am trying to find a disk brake kit for my 1964 dodge dart gt. All the kits i have seen are not described very well. I was wondering what your guys opinions are on what kit I should look into getting and what modifications i would have to do to my car.
Thanks

You need to do some searches.

Does this look like it would be a good guide to follow for my earlier a body?

If you go 73+, you will need to change wheels and rearend to 5x4.5 bolt pattern. Or use wheel adaptor for spare tire. I'm in the process of doing a kelsey Hayes swap that allows you to go to disk brakes and keep the small bolt pattern wheels. I'm not positive the K-H swap will work for your year. Hopefully someone else will correct me if this isn't a good option for your year.

Do some research on the K-H swap. If you decide your interested I have a whole set up to sell ('68 barracuda; I bought for a friend who then didn't need them).

The Ehrenburg article is an ok place to start.

It is not as gospel as it makes out to be.

So you believe there are other or better ways of doing this conversion?

Best way to get disc brakes- get the factory disc brake system off of a 73-76 Dart/Valiant/Duster/Scamp. It will bolt right on. THe catch is you will need to change the rear axle to get a matching wheel bolt pattern.

This is why it was recommended you do some searches- this topic has been covered in in very great detail, many many many many many many times before on this website. You will be able to find many threads of people edging disc brake swaps/upgrades.

It will be a bolt-in for his 64 and he can keep his 5 on 4 wheels in the rear.

So the K-H kit would be a direct bolt on for my car?

Only if his car came with 14" wheels...he will need new wheels in the rims are 13"...

I have 13" so I neeed new wheels any way.
I have been looking to do this since I was 16, on and off. I am 22 now and the car is no longer my daily driver so I can do some work on it. The research I have done seems to always be on the later a bodies. I have still yet found something directly related to my car. But I don't know everything about the early a body mopars and maybe there are some models or later years that are very similar or identical to my car.
I am knew to this forum stuff and you guys have all been very informative I really apretiate it.
Thanks

First off, GREAT car! I am partial to 64'Dart GT's.
I am in the process of gathering parts for the same 9" drum to disc conversion you are talking about. My plans are to also move up to LBP(Large Bolt Pattern) as there is a better selection of wheels to choose from. I am using the Larger Rotors (11.75") too, so I will be going to a 15" wheel.(again, a better selection of wheels to choose from. Various widths, backspacing, styles) I found most of my parts from a 1975 Dart (Spindles,Dust shields, caliper cores, 7-1/4 rearend) 1975 Chrysler Cordoba (Caliper brackets), everything else I am buying New. Total in all brake parts is about $450 (minus wheels/tires) There are kits out there, but I kinda like the Frankenstein aspect of the conversion!
