I am wondering if there is anyway of telling if a head has had previous work done to it such as having material removed from its deck service....I mean I know there must be a way but how? I have a spare head and may start collecting others to dicker around with and Id like to know what I am working with before starting the work. I have read that this is a common way to increase compression within an engine and understand this to be true but do not know how to check for this. Thanks Also now that I think of it I had my head shaved when machine work was done but I know that prior to this machine work had been done to this particular engine but that was long before I came upon it, maybe the head was trued up at that point as well and material had been removed. Id like to get an idea of the compression ratio I am running right now. |

The only way to tell for sure, is to CC the combustion chambers. But if you measure the dimension from the head gasket surface to the valve cover surface, it will give you a rough idea. The nominal dimension is 3.600, but it can measure anywhere from 3.590 to 3.610. If it measures close to those numbers, most likely it has not been milled. |

On a related note, is there a formula or set of numbers to determine what size the chamber is if the head has been known to have been milled? That would be handy to know if one did not have the stuff to CC a dead. Thought I saw something on a post to that effect but darn if I can find it. |

Post subject: | casting number |
most of the casting numbers have different CC's. Valve jobs change the volume also. CC's are the only sure way to tell. |
