Post subject: | Spark Plug Tube Gaskets on 225 |
Hey folks. I am new to this forum. I am a member on AllPar and was referred to slantsix by a user there. I am a new owner of a 1971 Plymouth Scamp with a 1969 225. I recently found out that my oil leaks are most likely due to the spark plug tube gaskets or lack of. I got a set of them but I am curious. They seem quite thick. . .1/8 ". It does not seem that there are any gaskets on the tubes currently. So I have nothing to compare to. I see the two mating surfaces with the scalloped ledges. When I put the gasket on it seems that it will keep the plug out from the chamber a bit. Am I looking at this right? I saw one blog that said I should remove the crush ring from the spark plug first. Will these gaskets crush down enough. Currently without the gaskets, the lip of the tube sits pretty flush with the head. I did not want to try and have the plug pull through the end of the tube. Thanks for any input. |

not sure what plugs you are using, but 1/8" thickness on the spark plug tube gaskets seems fine. The head has a small recess, and you want them to crush alittle so they seal properly. |

actually have not gotten the plugs just yet. I plan on doing the whole thing this weekend. just wasn't sure if I should be worried about whether the new gaskets don't smash down enough to be flush which would hold the plug a bit further out of the chamber. I will give it a trial run this evening. |

Yes, the plug will pull the tube in and compress the seal for a snug fit. I have a '67 225 and I use NGK GR4 2635 plugs and I do remove the crush ring from the plugs before installing so the electrodes are better placed in the combustion chamber. Here is an older thread on plugs and the crush ring: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... crush+ring bg |

When you pull the tubes to replace the gaskets, make sure that you use a shop rag or paper towel and a little brakekeen and wipe around where the gasket will go...if there's any crud in the 'groove' in the head it will just start leaking again sooner than later. -D.Idiot |
