| Post subject: | Wire issue were car will not start |
So about a month ago I took the cluster out of the dash to fix the amp gauge which had started smoking (typical issue glad it didn't start a fire). After fixing this issue I put all the gauges and cluster back into the dash and now the car will not start. It did run and start before I took the dash apart. I had also noticed that the turn signals were starting to become weak, but this might be a completely different problem. All the lights and gauges do turn on and move (including the amp gauge). I also have touched the starter's terminals to make sure there isn't anything wrong with the starter (it did turn over). I am somehow losing power from the ignition to the starter. Any suggestions on which wire is not right? |

I would look at all the terminals at the bulkhead connector on the firewall- in particular the heavy wires that go to the amp gauge. You really need to have a good wiring diagram for your car. A better way to diagnose might be to get a decent digital voltmeter- attach a long jumper wire from battery negative to the meter black lead. Then turn the ignition switch on & use the meter red lead to test every point from the battery, to starter relay, to ignition switch, etc. The battery should read about 12.6V (some less with things turned on), ideally you sould see very close to the battery reading at all power side connections throughout the car-( within .2-.3V ) For example, if you only get 10V out of the ignition switch, but over 12V in, then your problem would be in the switch or its connector. Don't forget to also test the ground wires from the battery to the body & engine. It's done similarly, turn loads on then test for any difference in voltage from the batt negative connection to the block & to the body. |
