The OEM studs are swedged after they are installed. This locks the hub and drum together. The proper way, you must cut the swedging before pressing the studs out, or you might ruin the hole in the hub. There is a special tool for doing this. Yes. I meant to mention that. It is a pain, but if you only have one or two drums to do, it is a lot cheaper, then the tool.I have both the 7/16 and 1/2 inch cutters. |

So if I were to cut the swedge and remove the drum are the studs still pressed into the hub? or is the swedge what holds them all together? |

Wait, the studs are swedged after the drums are installed to hold the drums on? I'm just curious, I never had a problem removing the drums on my '64. Maybe mine had already been cut. |

The studs are pressed into the hub and drum assy. Then the studs are swedged to "clamp" everything together. If you just try to press, or beat out the studs, without cutting the swedge, you will ruin the drum, and most likely the hub also. Even after the swedge is cut, the studs are still a press fit in the hub. |

Thanks Charlie, I see new drums are available from rockauto and was curious if after removing the swedge could you just leave the drums removable. |

Mmmmm, typed a reply but it didn't show up. Maybe I forget to hit the submit button. When ever I do this I always use new studs (usually all right hand), but I have never reswedged them. Never had a problem. The original swedege might have been for a factory assembly thing, or possibly by having the drum, and hub "clamped" tightly together, eliminate vibration/noise. |
