who is running them? are you happy with it? what are the limits of them vs a header? if you were to make another one would you do anything different? if so what?

I would just cut the exhaust flange off and weld the turbo flange on.

I am running a "J" pipe. Did my turbo in 1979, and never tried anything else.
Header would probably be better for power, but also more expensive. My install was to be as cheap, and simple as possible. It is a draw thru, using a corvair turbo. Here is a link to some old pics of my setup.

thats a pretty crazy setup you got going on there. im trying to go for cheap too. did you ever get it out of the 13's with that setup?

im at a crossroads with what to run for my setup. the j pipe seams really easy and it would most likely support the power i would like to make(for now). on the other hand the flanges (header, turbo) i would need to make a header for it are readily available on ebay as are old sets of headers to cut up for the piping to make it. to stay within my non existent budget the j pipe is the way to do but if i can get away with doing something once and spend a little more that seems like the road to take. im trying to figure out what the j pipe will support in terms of power before the stock manifold begins to choke off the setup.

Never got it running any better. I put it back together about six years ago, and put it in my Cuda for a Bristol,Tn slant six race. Had some problems at the track (no test before hand), so removed the turbo setup, and put the nitrous back on (in the pits). I am in the process of fixing up my 65 Valiant, and will be puting the turbo engine back in that car, as it was originally, but with a few minor upgrades (MSD BTM, and a wideband AFR).

are you gonna keep the drawthrough setup?

Yes, everything will be the same (old school), except for some tuning aids. That was the big problem I had when I did the install. There was no such thing as a BTM, or a wide band AFR meter. The only thing I had was a Exhaust gas temp gauge from an aircraft. Broke a few parts due to a poor tuneup leading to detonation.

I made one and eventually went in the 12s with it one fall. Over winter, I built a header and put on a new turbo so that changed the whole combo.

They are easy and can make good power.

thank you, thats pretty much what i was looking for. are you running the normal exhaust manifold or a super six setup?

It was a stock 70 exhaust manifold with 18" of 3" downpipe before it transitioned to the 2.5" exhaust to the bumper.

There is no difference between the 1 bbl exhaust manifod and the super six exhaust manifold

i keep hearing that but in my pile of manifolds all stock most have an opening of about 2 inches and one is opened up to 2 1/2. i dont know if it is just a different year or what is going on but the runners are larger as well. i assumed it was a super six.

I had a cut and welded manifold, and the welds didn't hold up very well. About 60% of the weld area had failed by the time I removed it. Cast iron isn't easy to weld.

My current work in progress is using a J-pipe, but is not up and running yet.

aside from not finding anyone around here to do it, that was my other concern with welding the flange to the manifold.
