Hi guys,

The speedometer in my 64 Valiant works fine up till about 40 miles an hour and then begins to bounce around. I replaced the cable believing that must be the problem but it was not. I have the speedometer out right now and it looks as it should, the square hole is square. Any ideas on what else I might look for and if it cant be fixed what options do I have given any other 64 is probably worn out as well..thanks, Mark

Dan did a writeup on here years ago but I can't find the link. What he did was take some white lithium grease and mix it with powdered graphite until it turned a light gray color. With the speedo out, he put the grease between his fingers and then pushed the speedo cable through them and into the housing so the cable was greased.

I've done this a few times, it works temporarily for about a year or so and then goes bad again. If you've greased it and replaced the cable and it's still happening, you're going to have to either buy a NOS one or get it rebuilt.

If you want the lubercant to not get hard after a few years,, clean the cable and using the cable thru the fingers trick use Vasoline. Also on the back of the speedo head where the cable inserts is a bronze bushing, pack that area with Vasoline before installing the cable. The guys at Redline Gauge Works told me that tip about 10 years ago.I have had no problems since with about 8 cars and trucks using that method. Just a thought.

Whatever works. I use "Kable Ease" speedometer cable lubricant. manufactured by A.G.S. Co., Muskegon, Michigan. My 2 bottles are pretty old, so I don't know what local auto parts store I bought them in. (For any locals, that may be my favorite place, the "Auto Value" Parts Store affiliate here: Roxbury Auto Parts in White Center (Seattle) .
