Title says it all. Installing new brakes and need to know where to start the starwheel self adjustors. Should they be turned all the way in? Or somewhere in the middle? How do you know where to begin them?

I manually adjust them as far as I can and still get tge drum on. Final adjustment with the drum. It all depends on whether you have turned the old drums or installed new ones.

I usually assemble the shoes with the star wheel all the way in, then loosely fit the drum on & see how much I can rock it (angled back & forth). If there's alot of slop or looseness, I pull the drum off & run the star wheel out a few turns & recheck. When it's close, then drum will only fit if I gently push it on "squarely". Once the drums are on "for good", I finish any hydraulic work, pump the pedal a few times, & do final shoe adjustments.

I haven't read up on what these do, but I assume that over time, as your brake shoes wear down, the self adjustors keep turning and 'pushing' the shoes out further so they're in constant close-contact with the drum, ready to go. Is that right, or do they do something else as well?

When adjusting drum brakes, I do the above described method of expanding the adjuster until the drum drags being installed and then do the final adjustment through the adjusting hole in the backing plate until there is a very slight drag when the wheel is turned. I then find a hill that I can safely back down while braking repeatedly. Fortunately, my driveway is such a hill. Remember, the adjusters adjust only when the brakes are applied in reverse. Manually adjusting them followed by the backing down the hill adjustment will get your drum brakes set good.
