| Post subject: | Is it standard to clean wheel hubs of all grease? |
I'm just wondering if I should clean all the old grease from the inner hub of my wheels when doing a brake job. Is that typical? |

Whenever you do a brake job, you should always clean all the old grease from the bearings and hub. Inspect the bearings and races, replace if necessary. Repack the bearing and the hub (about 1/3 full), replace the seal. Adjust bearing preload to factory spec. There are two reasons for doing this. 1) The old grease is contaminated with dirt. 2) not all wheel bearing greases are compatible with other brands/types, even though they might have the same spec. |

Thanks Charlie. What does that mean, "adjust the bearing preload"? How do I do that? |

Put the nut on the spindle, and while rotating drum, tighten the nut to 70 in/lbs. then install the tin lock nut on the adjusting nut with a set of notches in line with the cotter pin hole in the spindle (do not rotate the adjusting nut to do this. just change the position of the lock nut). Now back off the adjusting nut, and lock nut (together) so the next notch lines up with the cotter pin hole in the spindle. Install cotter pin. Install dust cap. Done.
