I replaced the voltage limiter on my 71 dart with one from summit racing. It's a little different from the original but it fit. It has an extra prong coming out of the top of it for a wire to connect to. My problem is that the temp and fuel gauges show lower than they should. I filled my tank and it shows at 3/4 on the gauge. And it will surge back and forth between full and 1/2. Did I get the wrong limiter? Or is there a different problem. The reason I replaced it was because when I had my headlights on the back light would go out on the dash, the turn signal lights would glow solid green and my temp and fuel gauges would either go to full/hot or empty/cold. But I could smack the top of the cluster and they would go back to normal until I hit another bump.

Your problem was not the limiter, sounds more like a loose ground. The limiter has no effect on anything but the gauges.

Loose cluster mounting screws can do that. The cluster ground is through those screws to the dash frame, then to the body ground.
The "extra prong coming out of the top of it " concerns me. Are ya SURE it's the correct Instrument Voltage Regulator for your car??

I put the original limiter back in and it seams to be working fine. As for the loose ground that must be it because I only have 2 screws holding in the cluster. I'm sending the new limiter back to summit, It's probably not the right one, but that's the only one summit had when I put in 1971 dodge dart.

Just two screws holding the cluster?? I don't know the '71 Darts, but did the factory just use two screws? Grounding all the electrical stuff in our aging Mopars is crucial and bad grounds will send ya to the nuthouse looking for problems that don't exist. (like the one you just found) When I remove an instrument cluster, I always install a separate ground wire from the cluster ground to a good solid body ground. Use a bullet connector to let you disconnect it when necessary.
Also for troubleshooting the cluster in the car, a separate ground is needed 'cause without it the cluster either will not work or it will lie to you.

Yea, there's 6 holes, when I got the car it had 3 left and shortly after that I lost one. So I need to find 4 more but yes it all makes sense now!
