I am considering purchasing a vehicle that has had two full paint jobs with ugly spray paint. Like rattle can spray paint. Is there a quick and/or easy to remove the spray paint but keep the factory paint as a base? I realize the factory paint itself is unsalvageable, but I would like to use it as a base for a better paint job, if possible. Anyone have any tips they can share? Brake fluid? Sandpaper? Chemical stripper? |

I think it would depend on type of paint, some enamels oven cleaner will remove without harming factory paint. Other formulations you will have to experiment on. I'd be wondering what horrors all that rattle can work is hiding. Or leave it be, and drive a rat rod, they're all the rage these days. |

How much are you stripping? I did the Hpak duster over the course of a summer with 1 gallon of "Aircraft stripper and a wirebrush"....if it's a "small patch" brake fluid or other chemical means may work best.... -D.Idiot |

A full Ramcharger, top to bottom, front to back. A blue rattle can paint job THEN the flat black rattle can paint job. Rat rods aren't my style. I was thinking maybe paint thinner and about a million old towels? Aircraft stripper sounds interesting. I wouldn't want to strip off the factory paint, but I wouldn't care much if the original paint was harmed. I am pretty sure the original paint is only good as a base now. Hmmm. Lots to think about. |

Yeah, Aircraft Stripper is a thick paste like apple sauce, but is extremely caustic, you brush it on and leave it for a while, and come back and scrape the bubbling paint "goo" down to the bare metal off with a shellac knife (then rinse with a hose and address the "tough spots" with something else). -D.Idiot |

Acetone. Thinner won't do much. Brake fluid may leave residue. You can't control how many layers you go through with stripper. Is it ugly because of aesthetics, or does it actually have issues like flaking/peeling? Can you scratch it off with a finger nail? If so then it didn't have proper physical bond to the layer underneath, which means you'll have to sand the entire car first regardless. |

Haven't seen the vehicle in person yet, just pictures. It is very aesthetically ugly, and I would rather drive around with a crappy looking factory paint job than the really ugly spray can paint job. However, I doubt I will look at the truck since I found out that the entire interior has been sprayed with Rhino-Liner (the truck bed spray).

Acetone will take spray paint off but wont harm clear coat. If the paint underneath the rattle can paint is old and faded enough, the acetone might affect it. I'd try it in an area that's not real visible to see what the acetone does to the paint underneath first. |

never done an entire vehicle (just motorcycle gas tanks and small items), but Easy-Off oven cleaner will strip all the paint off down to the bare metal, and it is some Nasty Stuff to work with, so Be Careful! |

I am fairly certain I am going to pass on this truck. I really don't feel like tackling this kind of paint removal project. Thanks for the tips, though. |
