I am planning a rebuild soon on the original slant 6 in my 1970 D100. I am torn between using the original head with tubes or using the other head I have from a 1978 without tubes.

Presuming both heads are good, which one should I use?

If I use the original, it is numbers matching. But the newer one doesn't have the leaky tubes.

I don't know if we'll live long enough to find anybody that cares if a slant car is numbers matching.

Plug tube heads weigh less than peanut plug heads. Some folks have trouble getting spark plug tubes to seal. If you don't care about the weight for a daily driver, and haven't built the engine substantially, the peanut has it's advantages.

There are more spark plug options for the drool tube head, at least options that have been explored. More heat ranges are available, with both long reach or otherwise than the peanut.

The newer heads sure make for a nice clean motor. I use the NGK UR4 platinum tip plugs and the run very clean.

What about chamber design? And the later head has hardened seats? Or just the flame induction?

I think I will use the newer head mainly because I want to keep the motor clean.
