Post subject:  torsion bars

Hey gang,

just received in my new torsion bars from Chrysler the other day for my 66 Barracuda along with new rear springs from Chrysler.

The torsion bars are marked 895L and 895R with is left being drivers side and right for passenger side. Anyone know does that stamp go to the front or the back of the car?

They are oriented a certain way for a reason but what way? I don't have a service manual and I am not sure if the current ones have ever been removed in 40 years.

Thanks,
Joe

The critical part is that the Left and Right are installed correctly. (!) They are designed to twist a certain way. Also, the hex mounts are offset by a certain amount (between each end of a single bar) to account for that twist. But once you've got the bar on the proper side of the car, it makes no difference which end of the bar is facing front or rear, because the twist to the bar is the same either way. It is, however, pretty typical to see the marking in the rear because it's more easily visible to identify the bar later.

Another critical point, mentioned in both the Chrysler shop manual and in Frank Adkins' Chrysler Performance Upgrades book, is that care is taken not to nick or scratch the bar, as that will develop into a stress point. Coating with epoxy paint is advisable, too.
