Hey guys, Haven't posted in here in a long time. but now have a 65 valiant. Radiator is leaking horribly from every imaginable crevice. looking to no avail for a replacement. my question is, what are my options? Are there interchangeable radiators across years for 65 valiant? (with what i believe is the 170 slant) This also is an automatic transmission. does anyone out there make new replacements? |

I had a similar problem but with finding a rad for my 73 Dart. Since I had a spare 65 slant six rad, I found that it was pretty much a bolt-in. The main fitment issues were the lower rad nozzle (65 is angled up, 73 is straight out) and a lack of boss to mount the EGR temperature sensor. Swapping a 65 lower rad hose onto the 73 engine worked perfectly. Since the 65 rad fits a 73 Dart, my guess is that a newer rad will fit your 65 Valiant with only a lower rad hose change. I'm using a 65 V8 rad in my 65 Barracuda and you would need a universal flex hose as the upper rad hose (12" IIRC). Matt Cramer has a write-up for fitting a F-body rad into his 66 Dart: How To Replace the Radiator in a '63-'66 A-body Many people here have also switched to an aluminum rad because it was cheaper than rebuilding a brass rad. A friend had an aluminum rad custom-made for his hot rod by sending out the old rad as a pattern. I would get a full-width rad but be careful about the core thickness because there is very little clearance between the fan and rad. Make sure that nozzles are in the right places before you buy anything. |

I've been working on cooling issues in my '64 Valiant for a long while. The original radiator was barely adequate without the AC in place. When the top tank rotted, I went with a relatively simple swap to an Aspen unit. That didn't really cool any better than the original. It did not cool well with the AC on. Now I'm using an American Eagle (Champion) aluminum radiator intended for an early Mustang with a 289. They have the passenger-side inlets and outlets, and are available with automatic transmission coolers. There were some issues getting it in. Some cutting and fabricating was required. I don't really recommend it, but it is working. The radiator had to be offset to the passenger side, so I modified the brackets and made some extensions for the driver's side. The transmission cooler outlets are spaced differently. One outlet was just too close to the crank pulley. The fix, for now, is a couple of 90-degree fittings to side-step the oil line. The lower coolant outlet is a different size from the original and is in a little different position. My lower hose is cobbled together until I find time to hunt down the right one (if it exists). The good news is that it seems to work well. It got done a little late for the full heat of a Texas summer last year, but it's been doing well so far this year. Road trips are coming up, so we'll see. |

I have one of the replacement rads for a 70 or later I believe. The lower outlet goes straight out, rather than bending up. I used a different lower hose to make it work. Used for 3 months and upgraded again. Pm me if you still need one. $20 plus shipping if it'll help you out. |

You can also use a \6 F-Body radiator. You need to modify the lower mounting holes and use an upper radiator hose for a F-Body with AC and the lower radiator hose for a '75 Dart. If you get one for an AC car, you get the 22" radiator which increase the cooling capacity. |
