i need to put a bead in a section of intercooler piping. i dont have a bead roller and dont know anyone that has one. anyone have any ideas on how i could do it cleanly without one?

ok i finally got around to needing to do it. i didnt have a bead roller obviously and i didnt have a 3" exhaust clamp but i do have big nuts. pictures are pretty self explanatory. if you got big nuts, a bench grinder and some vise-grips they you can do it too.

Other ways to go, depending on size, would have been to go to a sheet metal shop or the shop teacher at the local community college and have them roll it on a machine for ya, that would ensure a good deep bead for clamping onto.

Being a career sheet metal worker, the straight edges on your roll former nuts shown in the pics should have been rounded with a fine file...this prevent nicking the aluminum and later causing a stress crack from vibration (aluminum is not as forgiving when formed like iron, and a blemish on the die will cut it a little, much like a tubing cutter on the first pass).

getting it done wasnt an option i tried. there is nowhere around here that does anything like that and no one i know has a bead roller. as for the bead, the one i made is actually deeper then the ones that came on there. im happy with the results. if it does eventually break ill make another one. and round the edges a little better on my dies. ill keep an eye out for someone that has a bead roller. if i come across one ill make another pipe and change it. i still have alot of the piping kit that i got.
