Like the title says the car (Signet 200 Hrdtp) hasn't been started in three years, getting ready to put it up for sale so gotta start it. The engine is good/rebuilt with only 500ml on it, I've put some Deep Creep in the cylinders a couple of times (took spark plugs out) over the last three years, and , I put Stabil in the 'premium' gas and added some Chevron Techron. I used to start it once a month, or , and once the gas got to the carb it always fired right up, but I stopped doing that. So, is this thing gonna start? And what can I do to help the process along? My Father says I should put a little gas in the carb before I try and fire it up. Any suggestions/knowledge will be gratefully excepted. Oh ya, it has a Dutra split manifold! Thanks! |

You might pull the spark plugs and spin the engine for about 10 seconds at a time, waiting 30 seconds in between, until the oil pressure comes up. This should also fill the carburetor and allow the engine to start immediately once the plugs are reinstalled. Putting gas down the carb risks washing the oil from the cylinder walls and scuffing a piston. |

While the plugs are out you can spin it over and watch the oil pressure to make sure everything is lubed. I can get a full 45 lbs. Put the plogs back in and if you accelerator pump shot is not strong enough to prime it, then yes......a little gas down the throat. |

A squirt of oil down each hole and then turn it over by hand (crank bolt) a few revolutions. Unplug the dist or coil then crank it over until the oil pressure light goes out. This will give the carb a chance to fill up too. Gas down the carb wouldn't hurt but don't go overboard, a spoon or two should do it. |

Thanks for the replies. Am I going to be able to get a socket down where the crank bolt is so I can turn it? And which way do I turn it, or , does that matter with the plugs out? Also, does anyone know what size that crank bolt is? Turning the engine this way sounds like the way to go, I'll only put a little gas in the throat if things don't get primed. I just put Deep Creep in the cylinders about four weeks ago, do I still need to lube them with oil now? I guess it wouldn't hurt just to be safe. One more thing, it doesn't have a battery at this point and my Father thinks I should just use the battery from my daily driver to get this car started, I think that's a real bad idea, any thoughts? Thanks again for the help, I really do appreciate it. If I had the money I'd keep the car, just talking about working on it gets me excited! I have a LONG history with this car. But it needs to go, it's just sitting and rotting at this point, sad to say. |

Before doing the above, change the oil. if the oil is 3 years old, it's not going to be in good shape. |

Nice to hear from someone in Oregon, this cars original owner lived in Portland, that's where the car spent the first 6-7yrs of it's life. The oil that comes out on the dipstick looks, feels, and , smells fine. It has no usage really on it, maybe 25ml. I just wanna get the car started so that when someone comes to look at it I can start it for them. I 'hope' the oil is good enough for what I'm trying to achieve. Thanks for responding. |

I'm guessing this thing doesn't have current registration / insurance? If I were buying a car, I'd like to take it for a drive, and while I don't think running it a short distance on the oil that's in it will be a big deal, just be sure the new owner is aware that the oil does need to be changed. Especially if you've just rebuilt the engine. The battery from your daily ride should be fine provided it is in good shape. The worst you'll experience from swapping it out is maybe having to reset your radio. 1. Remove spark plugs and disable ignition 2. Oil cylinders 3. Crank over until oil pressure builds (Not all engines came with a bolt in the front of the crank shaft, if your's does not have one, you'll just need to crank it with the starter) 4. Remove air cleaner and check carb for pump shot 5. If pump shot is good, install plugs, and enable ignition system a. If pump shot is not good, some fuel may need to be added to the carb before starting. 6. Fire it up! Once it's up and running, you want to be sure that you are checking the engine for leaks of any kind. You may see some smoke due to it sitting, so long as the smoke isn't alarming and followed by flames, you'll be fine. You can top up the cooling system while it's running, just get started filling it before the engine is fully warmed up. ~THOR~ |
