The part that is welded to the right side failed dramatically this morning with a bang. This allowed the torsion bar to slide rearward so not only does it not support the lid, but it must hop over the bracket on the hinge itself with a bang when you open it. The little roller that goes between the hinge and the torsion bar shot off somewhere unbeknownst for now. I can see I must make some sort of patch to hold that torsion bar back in place, but have not studied it enough to see any logic in how to proceed. Anybody out there done this? I know from my experience with the hood hinges that removing the stock parts and replacing them with compression cartridges could result in some serious rattling, as the looks like those torsion bars keep tension on all the parts when it is closed. Are you saying the end of the torsion bar that contacts the arm holding trunk lid to hinge via a nylon glide, and its “C†shaped hole no longer has it ability to contain the bar? I had the same problem and was able to repair the stamped part with welding some sheet metal or washer (can’t remember which) cut to mimic the original stamping in place. I also had to do some hinge attachment stud reworking to better accept the hinge and its capnut. The project was a total PIA several notches more irritating than working under the dash… Yes the trunk lid has to be removed. My hinge and t-bar decided to part company 100 miles from home leaving trunk lid cocked and flopping. Luck was with me that day as I was able to get the trunk closed, latched, and home in one peice. |

Yes. Sorry I cannot spell trunk. I will tackle this tomorrow morning. I am certain the designers thought these cars would be gone in 20 years. Sam |

I never noticed. I need red underline to ID miss spelled words, and a good industrial strength creative spellcheck program to fix'em. 90% of what I compose is first done on MS Word in nice big font, than copied & pasted into the little gray box.

Got it repaired just before leaving on vacation. Made a cardboard pattern on tuesday. Gave it to my welder.fabricator guy on Wednesday. He made two, since I plan to reinforce the unbroken side as well. Picked them up Thursday, and installed one of them on the broken side that eveving. I had to modify them a bit, but with one in place and screwed on, the trunk is back to normal. When I get back I will take a photo of the repair and post it here. Now all I need is the nylon "bearing" which shattered when it all flew apart. I am glad to be back to thinking about important things like motors, transmissions and differential ratios. Sam |
