Post subject:  You can...

Being a late car, there are a few ways to figure out the original question.

The fender tag under the hood will give some of this information, you should also have a sticker on the edge of the driver's side door that will give the car's manufacturing date, and other fun details (if all the stickers are intact there will be tire pressure recommendations, a silver tag that it is/is not equipped with a catalytic convertor, etc...).

This may need comments from an expert, but as far as I know, the '76-'77 tank has an elevated part where the fuel filling pipe is attached, which is different from later models. I have seen mentioned that they don't interchange with later model tanks at all, but the question is if they interchange with all external connections and filler pipe included, and maybe need a rerouting of the fuel lines out of the tank as well. There may be differences in the body layout after april '77 that make the change impossible. I have both '77 and '78 wagons myself, but I have never removed the tanks to compare. I have frequently seen the question, but never a good and detailed answer!

Over on for F,M and J bodys only under the general F body discussion's ,page one I posted my solution, with pictures, of replacing the trunk floor with a latter M body floor. Now the problem went away, repops available!!!
