Post subject:  Door hinge rebuild tip

Guys,
With a tip from zorg, I went to the parts store and picked up Needa 38423 hinge pin and bushing kit. This kit is for the newer Dodge Ram and does not directly fit my 1970 Dodge D100.

There is a small diameter pin and a large diameter pin and bushing. The smaller one will work with a little drilling, and the larger pin will work with a little more drilling. After doing a few, I found that the larger pin and using 2 bushings works best. This makes for a hinge with no vertical movement.

Have a good assortment of good quality drill bits. A step bit works well in a few areas. If the old pin is rusted in, you will have to drill it out. Try to start in the center if each pin from each end and meet in the middle. It is a real pain, but possible with a little work.

The first few I rebuilt have a little bit of play, maybe 1/32" or so. The last one has no play at all, which is what I think is correct. I plan to redo one with the larger pin to eliminate some play.

Hope this helps if you need to do this. Let me know if you have any other tips.

Thanks, craig
