Ok y'all my brother ran his Aspen out of oil. He still has 50 pounds of oil pressure but the engine chatters, did he wipe out the cam or the rocker assembly? Thanks, Adam

Just about all the engine bearings and maybe the rings also. :(

How could the bearings be gone if it holds 50 pounds of oil pressure?

You have a oil pump that will put out more oil than the engine can use, if it didn't have a pressure release (spring loaded bleed off) how high do you think the pressure would be?
The lack of oil to lube the bearings will cause excessive wear (making too large of clearance).

Richard

A bearing can "spin", and then close off an oil passage in the crank, or block.

I'm just curious. How low does the oil need to get before it causes a problem in normal street driving? Back when I was an idiot teenager with a leaky rear main seal, I let mine get about 3 quarts low once or twice...

My bearings got hot and turned blue and then started knocking when my new oil filter blocked and would not bypass any oil. It just shut off all oil flow. That was doing 65 mph up a grade. Rings, pistons & cam were all fine from all the oil splashing. After I found a automotive store and purchased and installed a new filter I drove it home 60 miles. It was sad to hear the rod bearings knocking that much but it ran fine. I am thinking that the synthetic oil may have helped limit the damage.

I ran a slant six out of oil: no gauges. Once the steam started coming out it was cooked. I tried rebuilding the head, but it always smoked after that. Finally I got a replacement motor for $100, a BH block with low miles. Before I swapped it in, I put in a little more aggressive cam and planed some metal off the head. No problems after that.
It's not that much harder to do it correctly, which I didn't really do, but you can calculate the combustion chamber volumes and dial in a compression rate. Ideally you would plane the block the correct amount.

My brother said it took 4 quarts to bring it up to the full mark. I just can't see how a grown man can run a cool looking nice old car out of oil???? Go figure!

I had mine spin a bearing on the highway at about 70mph... Oil light came on, by the time I got pulled over the engine locked-up... Maybe 30-45 seconds of no oil press. Pulled the engine, every bearing was mush, and crank was destroyed, cam was eaten raw and lifters were just the same... Oddly enough the engine never made a single tick?
