I have a 71 Dart. Its have stock steel wheels but I want to have them altered to fit a more aggressive tire size. What is the widest that I can put on the car without it looking stupid. I want to go for the "rally" look. |

Limited clearance will prevent you from ever coming close to stupid wide. LOL Someone will chime in on a few tire sizes that one can squeeze up under an A Body fender. My 67 has 205/60x14, and nothing rubs. Another limiting factor will be availability of 13, 14, and 15 inch tires; there ain't much choice out there in tire land for these little doughnuts any longer in these days of giant wheels. I'm going to amen availability statement above, if you don't mind 250 bucks per tire, the restoration tire companies have a larger selection even bias ply, glass belted, and wide ovals. |

15x6 inch wheels from stockton wheel with 215/60R15 tires. They fit. They look stock. And the handling is MUCH better. My 1970 dart is mostly stock with 4 wheel drum brakes and 5 on 4 inch lugs. When the original 14 x 4.5 inch wheels became too rusty and bent, I went on line looking for replacements. Five lug on a 4'' circle is rare. However, I found Stockton wheel. stocktonwheel.com They can weld your old steel wheel centers to whatever width rim you want. A much cheaper option was their reproduction mopar rally wheel. The narrowest 15'' rally they sell is 6 inch. They fit with room to spare. I picked a 215/60R15 from the scrap pile because the circumference was close to the 195/75R14s that came off. The 215/60r15 was off a ford taurus I think. They shouldn't be difficult to buy new. |

Price update: repo rally wheels are no longer cheap. I got curious and called stockton wheel. Their 15x6 rally wheel goes for $165 each, more than I remembered. I guess it has been about 10 yrs. Salesman says its cheaper to rebuild your stock 14" steel wheels. They have 15" rims that will accept a 14" center. |

One of the problems faced by owners of 72 and older model years is the 5 x 4 bolt pattern. 73 and newer without disk brakes have the same issue. There is not a lot out there in current production for these cars. Cragar makes the S/S, and Wheel Vintiques makes the Rallye wheel and a poverty wheel for these hubs. I've seen cast Ansen Sprint wheels on eBay, but price, condition, and availability are uncertain. That said, my opinion is that the largest wheel that will fit under the car is a 15 x 7 with the stock 4¼" back spacing. I have a 72 Demon that has a 75 k-frame and BBP disk brakes. The latter push the wheel out a little farther from the center of the car. The car has 235/60-15 tires. There are no problems in the rear but the fronts occasionally rub inside the fender when making sharp turns on bumpy roads. I used to own a 73 that used the same wheel but with 205/60-15. Never a problem at all. |
