Took the back cover off of what was supposed to be 4.10 SG 8-1/4 rear. The gear is correct, but the carrier looks like an open. Only 2 spiders and no sign of clutches or springs. It is an open carrier, right? '74 A body rear.

The clutches and springs can't be missed. My springs are a nice pretty blue.  You can jack up the rearend and spin a rear wheel. They will spin in the opposite direction on an open diff. |

Thanks. I was pretty sure it was open. Rear is on stands. Buddy of mine bought it from a guy on this board a couple years ago. Apparently he got hosed.

Well getting hosed is all relative. When LSDs are working right life is good. I've got the suregrip and I wish I had an open diff at this point. Clutch style LSDs have their unique problems.

Is it safe to assume that the carrier for a truck is the same as one for a car, but a truck uses larger carrier bearings? Does anyone have the correct number for the car bearings? Rock Auto says Set #36. Thanks!

Thanks Greg. I found it unusual that for a '74 Dart (what I was going by) Otterzone, Rock Auto, and Pep Boys were all giving part numbers for 9-3/4 Dana rears.

My own experience was a hard lesson learned. I bought a 8.25 axle and then bought the SG carrier only to find that the side bearings were different sizes. The axles are also different sizes. My carrier was from a Jeep and was larger bearings than the Cordoba axle. P.S.- Anyone wanna buy a 27 spline 8.25 Jeep Sure Grip? |

Maybe... what gears are in it? Also, refresh my memory about the splines. Is 27-spline the earlier or later version? My axle is out of a 1984 Jeep; is there any reason your carrier wouldn't interchange? |

The 27 spline is the earlier one and the Jeep carrier worked with the Cordoba axles, even though the axle housing would not work with the Jeep axles at the hub end, because the Jeep axle shafts are larger even though the splined end is the same. Out of confusion, I went to Summit's website and tried to find the options for side bearings by model and year. Sure enough, the 1980-83 Cordoba had two sizes of side gear bearings available.  The pinion gear bearing turned out to be the same, so I was able to use the ring and pinion gears, with existing bearings, but had to run the factory Cordoba open rear carrier. That should be okay for stage 1 of my slant project.So my SG carrier has no gears, because I am using them. |

Ok, went and got a pair of Set 36 bearings the other day. They are the same as the truckbearings on the carrier now. I am going to the shop Saturday and get a bearing off the original carrier and see what I can find. |

OK, here is what I have learned in the last couple weeks: 1. The car bearing is Timken Set #47 or SKF Brg 50. 2. The rear end did in fact have a Trak Lok in it. I had never seen one before, now I have. The "clutches" are completely behind the side gears, no springs in the center like a SG unit. 3. The Sure Grip that I had Bill buy is now mine since I bought it from him since I screwed up. It will go in my truck. Hope this can help someone else from making the same boo-boo.
