Post subject:  Removing harmonic Balancer from a 170

A friend gave me a 170 that was completely rusted into a homogenous mass, so I thought of saving what I could get off. Got the distributor, head and manifolds, oil pan & pump, then thought I'd get the cam and timing chain cover. WRONG!!! Removing the cover requires removing the harmonic balancer. The FSM tells me to install too # such and such, which, of course I do not have.

Any help, ideas, sympathy, hole sizes and thread for bolts to use a puller is much appreciated,

BC

There's probably not a big bolt on the end of the crank at the HB, but if there is remove it of course. Any HB or even a good steering wheel puller will get it off, doesn't take much at all. Bolt holes are 5/16 IIRC.

Oops! sorry, I linked the wrong kit. The kit I have is a Lisle combo kit (45300/52650) that I bought 10...or 15 years ago!(I'm getting old! )

Thanks for the replies, folks! Looks like a run to my local "everything made in China store" tomorrow. I have a puller that only has provision for two bolts and none of the bolts with it
nor any of the surplus bolts from my stash fit the bolt holes in the balancer. It may well be that 50 years of God only knows what treatment has resulted in lots of rust/corrosion build-up and
I'll need to chase the holes before any bolts will fit.

The balancer will make a neat paperweight for my outdoor workbench. (Oughtta hold stuff down in a Texas "blue norther"!) Once I get the balancer off, I can salvage the cam for regrinding and I'll have
darn near all the /6 "hotrodding parts for stage one of the upgrade I've been working up to for the AZDart.

Ccurrent plan is to mill the head 60 - 90 thousandths, big valves and mild port & polish. Offy intake, Holley 390 carb & Dutra Dual duals with an Aggressive Ted exhaust system. Should be fun!
AND the engine doesn't have to come out to do it.

As always, any suggestions, thoughts or comments are welcome.
