What do you guys do to tame belt squeal?

3 V Belts on a 79 Slant.... Fan/ Alt.---Power Steering---AC.

Never really had any problems before, But then replaced all three belts and now it howls alot!

It could be due to worn pulleys or loose belts. When does it squeal? Start up? check alt belt. Only when a/c on? check a/c belt. Turning at low speed or stopped? check p/s belt. All the time? check for misrouted belt or locked pulley. Please give us more to go on for better answers. Not trying to be simplistic or imply that you do not know these things.

Whenever I have a noisy belt tightening it usually quiets it down. You might try belt dressing.

Mostly on start up...

Some times when I blip the AC on..

I thought That I usually over tightened stuff before.. I have snapped off so many bolt heads and then had to get eze outs that I lost count.
so I will go back and reallly Lean on the belt tension this Time :-)

Hope fully that will help.

Thanks,

Greg

Sounds like alt belt. It is a long span between pulleys so it is easy to be a little loose.

I wonder if the belt material or dimensions might not be correct or appropriate?

Belts have a break-in / stretch period when new. Unless there's an automatic tensioner in the system you should tighten them a second time after some runtime

that's what I did.

I never had to re tighten belts after a new install, but it helped immensely to the point where it's normal again !

Thanks,

Greg
