Hello Fopar or Ceej.

I am reading your degreeing the cam article, can I purchase from you or locally the solid bar stock that you place down in the lifter bore to do my measuring.

Looking at the pictures it would appear that you had to turn down one end but what size bar stock did you have to start with? Id like to gather as much info as I can before I try and find someone here locally to turn it for me.

I can get it one way or another but I thought one of you may have made extras you would not mind parting with?

Can you give me specifics on measurements, I am concerned/ or it seems to me that the large long bar might have a tendency to hang up in the bore. Did you experience this at all?

Thanks

I cut out a rectangle of stiff sheet stock drilled a hole in one corner to accept a valve cover bolt to secure it to the head making a solid mount for magnetic base of dial indicator. Using a push rod riding in its lifter held on center by dial indicator enabled reading lobe lift.

I did see that post and pictures, thanks, the more I think about it the more I am thinking that the dowel that Ceej and Fopar used would not work in what I am doing. If the engine were straight up on a stand than yes but since my engines are installed and slanted I believe that the bar would have a tendency of binding giving inconsistent readings.

BTW my head is off the engine

I used a 6" peice of cold rolled round stock turned down to .900 for about 3 1/2" and the ends were turned smooth and flat.
If you put oil on the part that goes into the lifter bore you shouldn't have any sticking.

Thanks for the info and advice, have you used the bar on an installed engine?

I like the idea, like the sturdiness and I dont have to be so delicate with things.

Have not used on installed engine but with the weight of the shaft peice it shouldn't be any problem.

I took two used lifters, and epoxied them together, pushrod end to poshrod end. Then my dial indicator would reach and had a flat surface.

I also did that with 3 lifters before had the shaft peice made.

I had my friend turn one for me today so I will be good now. Thanks though, I did think of the multiple lifter deal but this wasnt any big deal to get done.
