Ok I just got the turbo motor in about 2 weeks ago been driving it real easy and working on the tune i layed into it a couple days ago burnt the tires in first then when i went for the 2nd gear rip the clutch just slipped so let off now today i floored it in 1st gear slips too. I'm looking for opinions and solutions here please.
Current trans is a 833od with a stage 5 spec clutch with the super clamp option, the dam thing is less than 2 years old and seems to be trash already. The question is has anyone run any good 9 1/4 inch clutches that held up well with alot of holding power, plans for this motor is 20psi with a meth kit. I really want to yank the 4spd and go for a t5 swap or even a t56 if possible but i just unloaded money into my motor and i'm not looking to unload more money at the moment if i dont have to. The reason why i don't just pop in a new clutch is because i'm scared it will just slip like this one is because spec clutch promised big numbers for holding power i think my clutch was rated 400-500 ft lbs of tq if i recall.

I already roasted a stage 2+...the pressure ring is blue...
I've RMA'd it back for analysis and feedback...next clutch
for the hyperpak car is a stage 4, 6 puck...

Time for you to get something custom from McCleod if Spec can't
get this fixed...although I had asked and I have the first stage 4, they have made stage 3's, but had not mentioned that they had made a
Stage 5 forthe slant when I asked.

T-5 is only good to about 300hp/moderate torque so you'll be looking at a better box for your build, if you are going this route, you will probably want to score a low starter mount bellhousing from a late truck to have modified for the tranny then score the flywheel from the same vehicle which will allow use of an 11" clutch which the big block cars use and I know they can take the abuse and are easy to get from McCleod/Centerforce/etc...

I believe McLeod is a dead-end for slant clutches. I spoke with them before buying my Spec Clutch and they can't get the parts to build the smaller covers like we need. I think we're going to have to work with Spec to improve their product or see if another manufacturer is willing to work with us.

If you wan to make serious Horsepower and run a 4/5 speed. I would consider getting a V-8 Blowproof and flywheel. Remove the block plate from the blowproof and make an adapter to replace that plate that bolts to the slant six and adapt it to your blowproof. (I have this setup in my basement) Then the whole world of 10 1/2 " clutches is open to you. With the turbo you are going to need some holding power.

McLeod still makes the pressure plate that we put in Ryan's Dart. It is used in their Twin Disc setups, but that requires a new flywheel and a different bolt pattern drilled in the flywheel, plus they do not sell the clutch disc we used anymore.

I am really sad to hear about the Spec stuff. Perhaps you can talk to them also and get this fixed? It would be great to have off the shelf stuff that worked. If they don't fix it quickly they will not be selling them long.

I have talked to their tech guy, letting them know that a fair amount of people with money to spend, are waiting for a good clutch that would hold up to racing in our field, hopefully they can suck up to the challenge.

How the heck do Spec's products hold up behind V8s and such?? I don't get it. It sounds like they are barely better than a stock 9.25" setup.

That is exactly what I was thinking. We are not asking for something to stand up to 1000 HP. But if it won't hold up to 3-400 HP there is something wrong. Hopefully they will get it fixed quickly, and one of us can be a test bed for them. If they can fix this, they would have a corner on this market.

Dunno.........my stock 9.25 pressure plate and McLeod ceramic disc seem ok.......mebbe steep gears help.

I have to admit using a dopey " Let out the clutch at low revs ,,,,,,,,and hammer it" launch method.

The alternative is the " Light the tires to save the clutch" method.

I suspect Specs trouble is in the pressure plate. No reason that should be blue before the stock flywheel. No trick disc can make up for a bad pressure plate.

Sandy, That is a wimpy way to launch!! :D I suspect that we not going to follow your lead. As a point of comparison. Ryan's Dart has probably had at least 50 or maybe even 100 passes on slicks, dumping the clutch at 4-5000RPM, without so much as a wimper. It has also ran 5000+ miles on the road, with many more "test" launches on street tires, and still works great. In 2009 at Mason-Dixon they had open T&T lanes and he ran at least 3 or 4 back to back runs and had no problems. That is what needs to be duplicated by Spec or anyone else who wants to sell me a clutch.

I called them yesterday while I was at work and maybe I talked to the wrong guy but didn't seem to offer me anything besides oh well sometimes they last sometimes they don't which is ridiculus for these reasons.
Car Has only had a 4spd in it for much less than 2 years can't remeber exact date literally only brought it to the track 3 times with the stick yes i do beat the hell out of it on the street and it is my daily driver but lets be real it can't have even 10,000 miles on it i dont even drive to work anymore i have a work van for that. it's got maybe a few hundred miles with the turbo setup on it for 500 or 600 bucks sounds like a rip off to me. The guy i ordered it from said it was a stage 5 clutch with the super clamp option which was the highest holding stuff they could throw at me 2 years ago. I dont even want to spend money on a new clutch if they can't garuntee me it holds i'd rather go through the hassel of getting a 5 or 6 spd setup in the works. I dont really know what to do i guess i could call them back monday and ask for someone who actually will be making my clutch. Oh and not to mention the thing always had a metal on metal squeak sound since it was new which spec told me was totally normal and if you were to push my clutch pedal you would have body builder calves it's like bending rebar yet it can't even hold the 6psi.

Well, after i keep doing my research what do you guys think should i spend money on a clutch for a transmission i dont want or get crackin on a new trans swap project.

Kev

Kevin,

This is a diaphragm type PP right? If so something is bad wrong with your setup. One of the great things about a diaphragm clutch is that they push very easy while still holding good. It sounds like you got neither. I would call them back and try and be a bit more forceful. Perhaps if you do that and don't get any satisfaction, then try writing a nice letter explaining the situation and the loss of customers that certainly is going to happen if they don't make this right.

Rick Covalt

As for a new transmission, you are still going to need a pressure plate that fits inside your slant 6 belhousing even if you change transmission.

Kev,

Do you have photos of your Spec clutch? I have a Stage 3 and it has a 6-puck metallic disc with a sprung center. The cover has a single diaphragm spring. It's rated for 380 ft/lbs, but I'm unconvinced.

I spoke with Jeremy at Spec today because I'm leery of bolting my clutch into the car and not having it hold up. I had to get off the phone while I was on hold and he called back 3 times and left 2 messages. One message stated there may be a 9.5" clutch available. I have to call back in the morning and get the word on that.

There is a Taurus SHO clutch that is 9.5 . Its good to 250hp

My McLeod disc is based on this. The PP has a different bolt pattern.

I dont have any pictures but mine looks kinda like this

Mine was what they told me like an all metal disc or something it's also pucked disc, i'm starting to feel like i got shafted on this one.

It never slipped with the old motor but it was only running 9.6's in the 1/8th without the 100shot and when i sprayed it, it didnt slip though.
Jeremy sounds familar i think that the guy i ordered my clutch from I need to get a hold of him.

Kev
