I am about to embark on the rebuild of a 1960 Slant 6 of the 170 cubic inch variety. This will power a '60 Valiant V200 with a manual 3speed trans and a 3.55 equipped 7 1/4 differential.
Car will be used for shows (if I ever find the time) and just having some rip snorting fun. It's not gonna be a daily but will get driven to work occasionally.
Stuff going on the engine include a Hyper Pak intake and cast iron hyper exhaust manifolds, Carter AFB carburetor and some version of electronic ignition will give it life.
I think I can recondition the short block, minus the pistons, and use good bearings and ARP fasteners etc. for that but what kind of head work/cam is recommended?
I'd like maybe a 10 to1 compression engine and since its a zero deck engine what do I specify for a style of piston that will achieve that?

Thankyou for your help/opinions!

You can use a stock type flat top piston, and get about 11-1 compression ratio, with 40 cc combustion chambers. Biggest problem with a 170 engine is, being zero deck, you will have to notch the pistons for valve clearance, if you run a cam with more then about .450 lift and 270 adv duration, with that much off the head. Actually any 170 build, should have piston to valve clearance checked, if using other then a stock cam. A 225 "street" type build is usually not a problem, as the piston is at least .150 more away from the valve, stock, then the 170.

Thanks Charlie! I will investigate the piston situation and see if they are reusable or if I need to go up in size. If so ( most likely)then I will get some custom lighter pistons and take precautions to clearance for the valves either way.

Are there pistons which can give 9.5:1 static CR in a 170 without head or deck milling? I''m considering building a 170 for economy
