Yesterday, the temp gauge (which had been somewhat funky) started doing wild swings. Then when I parked and came back, both fuel gauge and temp were dead. This lasted through 2 more start/stop cycles, and now they work again. Any idea what could cause this problem - maybe that regulator that's supposed to d(maybe) be part of the fuel or temp gauge?

When it is very HOT out, my fuel gauge will die until I drive around alittle bit, then it comes back to life. I have a new tank, sending unit and wiring, so I always assumed it was in the gauge/Inst. panel. I have a water temp. and oil pressure gauge, so all I have to worry about is running out of gas!

Bad connections

Bad ground at gage cluster, and or temperature sensor and or between sending unit at tank and fuel line.

Voltage limiter's points may have stuck open. If voltage limiter's points stick closed gages will get full 12+ volts and fry the gages.

I think your voltage limiter is located in the gas gage; three posts attaching gas gage to gage cluster indicates limiter is in gage. These points heat up and cause them to open, and once cooled they close making and braking the circuit reducing average voltage to 5 volts; crude but it works for several decades before failing.
