Post subject:  Mopar 360 Fuel Pump Problem

The 1985 Mopar 360 in my boat won't pump gas (with several fuel pumps). It APPEARS that the FP cam is still there--I can feel pressure on the FP arm as I install it--but it won't pump with the motor running.

Anyone know what's causing this?

Thanks for any help.

A blockage in the line before the pump OR, even though your feeling pressure on the arm installing it there might not be enough of an actual lobe to pump the arm...

Not likely... but are you sure the cam is still turning? Can you see a rocker moving when you crank it? Or you can see if there's suction on the input port when you crank it

Maybe a clogged pickup in the tank or debris in the line? Not sure what a boat tank setup looks like.

There's no blockage. The pump has gas going to it by gravity, with a line coming out and going to a bucket. Still no pumping. If I hold the pump in my hand and pump it against the block fuel then flows.

Note: The motor runs fine when gas is forced into the carb (from another pump).

Is it possible the cam that runs the FP is loose or worn out?

Jeff

Yep, its possible. I recall reading about a case where the lobe on the cam running the pump wore down.

At this point unless your willing to do some surgery it may be easier to just put in an electric pump.

I'd LOVE to simply slap an electric pump on it, but I'm worried that something inside there may have come loose and....kerblawo!

As I recall (can't find a photo) the cam is a dish shaped deal that bolts to the camshaft in front.

Anyone got a shot of it?

Jeff

Outstanding! Just what I needed to see.

I can tell you that there is SOME resistance on that FP arm when the pump goes in, but no where near enough. So the cam is screwed up somehow...

Off with the timing cover!

Thanks a million. You guys are great!
