My 1970 Dart has a carburetor I don't recognize. I got a box of parts with the car, including a Holley 1920 carb and manifold, The one on the car has four bolts holding the carb to the manifold and the original has only two, The air cleaner on the car says Super 6 on it but I haven't found any information on it, Any ideas?

The carb could be a Carter BBD or a Holley 2280.

Thanks for the link! This is fantastic! Just the information I was looking for. The exhaust manifold is cracked at the heat riser and sounds terrible and I am trying to find out if it is causing drivability issues, like stumbling, hesitation, lack of power, etc. Now I know what kind of carb setup I am looking at, at least! No. A cracked exhaust manifold will be noisy and stinky, but won't cause the driveability problems you have mentioned.

Stumbling, hesistattion, and lack of power can be cause by a number of different and/or interrelated issues. Because you know that the intake manifold has been swapped, I would start by suspecting an intake manifold leak. You have to address the exhaust leak anyway, so I highly recommend you pull the manifolds and remount them as described here:

Once you get the manifolds reinstalled with no vacuum or exhaust leaks, you can test drive the car and then troubleshoot any further problems.

Common causes for the problems you describe are vacuum leaks, non-functioning vacuum advance in the distirbutor, faulty or misadjusted accelerator pump in the carb, misadjusted metering rods on a BBD, improper mixture settings on the carb, misadjusted kickdown linkage on the transmission, and there are more.

I found someone locally with an exhaust manifold in good condition. Now I am wondering if it is an early version, should I be concerned about the choke pocket compatibility? An electric or even a manual choke is fine with me. I didn't realize that the Super Six was such a unique animal! Thanks.

On top of your choke concerns - make sure the manifold is straight. They often warp so that the runners on the end are higher/lower then the rest. Bad enough to the point that once removed from a head you won't be able to reinstall because the holes on the 1/6 runners for the studs won't line up.

You can get new offshore exhaust manifolds on ebay for less then $100 shipped - they use the late model sealed type choke well. I recall a few here used them with good luck.

The manufacturer of the carburetor usually casts their name on the side of the float bowl. Plus, if you look at the pictures in the Super Six article you will see that there are obvious and plainly visible differences in the appearance of the Carter BBD and the Holley 2280.

Thank you! My Haynes book doesn't cover the Super Sixes. I now know that I am looking at the BBD!

The Haynes book is really not the ideal shop manual for your car. You should get a factory service manual both for your car and for a vehicle that woudl have been equipped with a Super Six package.

Welcome aboard! You definately came to the right place to find what you need be it parts, advice, or flat out help and information! Just scroll on through the threads here and you will find ALOT on the BBD, a couple very recent articles were started by me and the folks here filled them with tons of helpful info and advice! Ill be happy to help in any way, I just went through alot on mine getting it right so the knowledge is still pretty fresh lol...

There is a great link in the FAQs specifically on the BBD, best thing is just print it out and give it a good read. Then once you feel comfortable witht he way the carb works, get a kit and give it a good going through. Definately get that manifold taken care of and as others have said make sure they are flat and re-installed with the proper hardware.

Most importantly, HAVE FUN! Im sure you will enjoy the slant just as much as the rest of us and that super six set up will leave you very happy once all the bugs get worked out
