Very nice. Brings back childhood memories of our light gray two door 51 Plymouth c. 1954 when I was just a wee lad of about two years. I recall standing on transmission hump and helping dad by operating the windshield wiper switch dead center on top of the dash. Also remember dad removing and bringing in the battery whenever it got close to zero so the old 6 volt starter would have enough oomph to start it the next morning sucking air through an oil bath air cleaner. I asked dad (he is 92) about that car not long ago, and he said he spent a fortune getting the garage guy to come by on cold mornings to jump it so to get to work. Twelve volts and a slant are great upgrades. Enjoy your Plymouth. |

The '51s must have impressed us enough to keep a number of us interested in Mopars many decades later. My dad bought a dark green '51 Cranbrook 4-door that he drove until he traded on a '56 Belvedere in '56. The '51 was a good car as far as I can remember, though the winter starting was a pain. We had a garage and the car had a head bolt heater, so it wasn't too bad unless the temps dropped into the minus 30-40F range. It was the first car I drove and the one I took my driver's test in, so I do have fond recollections. |
