https://www.flickr.com/photos/13718356@ ... 541052819/ shortly before the broken rocker arm incident, I had started to hear what sounded like exhaust huffs, mainly around the head face to manifold joint at # 5 and 6 cylinder,, thinking that, at 4500 miles,, this would be an opportune time to just go through the whole motor set up again,, enlisted WV to help with the motor pull effort., we are actully pretty good at this,, practice, practice, practice. pulled the intake / exhaust manifold this PM,, the Fel Pro intake - exhaust gasket, was toast at # 5 cylinder, the gasket at #2 cylinder was close to burning through,, actually all of the exhaust ports shows signs of exhaust gas leakage,, this is with Dual Dutras and a cylinder head that had the intake / exhaust face re surfaced and checks flat. At the intake ports there was evidence of compression and no sign of failure, much different situation at the exhaust port interface. It appears to me that even with new - flat surfaces,, stock style manifold gaskets may not fill the requirements. Looks like it is Remflex or Aussie next time .. |

I designed and made a copper exhaust/intake gasket a while back at the request of some guys here because there was not a good selection of quality gasket products out there to deal with these problems. Plus they are reusable. |

There is a cast bump on the block at each end that interferes with the seating of the Dutra duals. You need to grind that down. Look for my recent question about the same thing here on the forum. There is a link to a photo of this cast bump and the interference. Mine are still leaking and getting worse. I will deal with it this fall perhaps. I have the remflex gasket, but it sits on the shelf for awhile yet. Sam |

I agree it could be interference. No reason you should be having leakage problems with a stock type gasket and those manifolds. Lou |

Your link is not to a photo Sam. Those bumps caused me great distress and a serious intake (and exhaust) leak when I put my big bore motor in. I cut them off every engine now just because! Rick |

If you happen to have a picture of the entire manifold installed id like to see it. I guess just looking at that snippet of a picture makes me think that maybe I have not seen a complete manifold bolted up.

those lugs front and rear manifold side are 'transfer lugs' used in the maching process as the touch points when the block casting was moved from one maching operation to the next...that round lug, down by the oil pan, same side of the block, bet a triangular locator went in there as a datum for locating machining front to rear and side to side. I had seen mention of the interfierence on a rear Dutra,, already cleared them. Nice tip, but that is not the issue. Concerning burning up the stock gaskets,, I had already burnt through two sets of stock style gaskets in the first 800 miles, where the Dutras attach to the down pipes, the Remflex gaskets have have survived the the last 3200 miles without issue.. I am running a small duration cam, with a narrrow LSA, so all of the valve events are close together,, including opening the exhaust valve, thinking that would cause exhaust temps to rise. I have a non contact temp gun,, when I get the motor back together I'll get some manifold temperatures. |
