Post subject:  170 Slant Six rebuild

I have a 1964 Dart and need to rebuild the engine. I would like to get a little more performance and a more "throaty" sound out of the engine. What suggestions do you have? Is there a rebuild kit that I should get? Any information is appreciated.

My opinion. Mill the head to increase compression. It is the best bang for the buck. A mild cam would help, also. A lot depends on what you are looking for. One thing to remember on the 170 engine, It is a "zero deck" motor. Meaning the piston comes to the top of the block. Not like a 198 or 225, where the piston is down in the bore. When milling the head and using a bigger cam you need to check piston to valve clearance, and possibly put valve reliefs in the pistons. On decking the motor, you can't do too much more then a cleanup cut, for the same reason.
