Hi guys, not sure if i should post this here or on the "other" section.. but did the 727 come in a hydraulic lockup flavor like the 904? would a 78 b series mopar van with a 318 have one? any way to tell 'fo sho' without dropping the pan? Thanks, Greg |

Any 78-up trans COULD be lock-up, but pick-ups/vans didn't have lu until 1982. Check the p/n on the oil pan rail, you never know if it's still the original trans w/o checking. |

There is 100s of P/Ns for lock-up trans, it would be best to find your PN, then look it up. |

I tried to do some research on these myself and did not get real far. The only sure way to verify you have a LU is to check the input shaft or by operation. If you do have a LU 727 it is quite obvious during operation. I found some of the best info at allpar, here is an bit of what they say. "A-727 transmissions from their inception until 1966 have 19 splines on the input shaft. Non-lockup 727 transmissions from 1967 onward have 24 splines. Lockup 727 transmissions that debuted in 1978 had 23 splines. Not all 727 transmissions made after 1978 were lockup; towing package 727 transmissions commonly were non-lockup, and would have the ’67-onward 24 spline input shaft. The A-518 overdrive also has 23 splines. The output shaft has 29 splines." I also know that not all of the part number lookups are accurate when it comes to LU727's. For example, my 78 NYB did in fact have a lock up, the VIN number on the tranny matched the car but the part number on it came up as a non LU in every lookup. Apparently this is very common. I have yet to find anyone who has first hand expert knowledge and I have chatted with some pretty good Mopar people about it. |

Hook up a tach, drive in high at around 45 mph, and press the accelerator enough to put load on the engine but not enough to speed up the car. If the rpm stays the same with increased load, it is a lock up. You can hear mine go into lock up and drop 100 rpm or so at 30 mph. It is so close to the shift speed that lock up happens almost immediately after 3rd gear up shift. Sam |
