Slant Six Forum :: 2 barrel carburetor pros and cons

A 2bbl with an adaptor plate onto your 1bbl manifold is not worth considering. Very bad idea, doesn't work well, makes problems and hassles.

A thoughtfully-selected 2bbl carb on a 2bbl intake manifold has a lot to recommend it. Better driveability, at least equal fuel economy (sometimes better). You'll need the intake manifold, the air cleaner, the throttle and (if automatic trans) the transmission kickdown linkage complete, and a shorter throttle cable.

You'll also need the carb, but finding a good 2bbl carb can be difficult. "Remanufactured" units are garbage (no mater what brand, type, or size of carb). The "NEW!!!!!!" Carter BBD carbs all over the internet are Chinese knockoffs -- junk, junk, junk. A (real) 318 V8 carb can be installed without much hassle, though the choke linkage can be frustrating to set up. Occasionally a new Slant-6 Carter BBD or Holley 2280 goes by on eBay; that's the primo grab.

Occasionally new Slant-6 1bbl carburetors go by on eBay, too.

I am driving a 72 dart with a 1974 225 and am looking into switching from my single barrel carburetor which needs a complete professional rebuild which would cost me at least 2 hundred to a two barrel carburetor. I was wondering what the pros and cons of two barrels are and whether I should keep my manifold and get a single inlet two barrel or an adapter or if I should switch to a two barrel manifold. Or maybe I should have my single barrel carburetor rebuilt. Suggestions will help. Thanks.

I cant say about the difference directly cause mine always been a 2bbl since I got it... My opinion though is its great! Shes got alot of pep in her step and the highway/freeway mileage is incredible... I really dont think mileage would be as good pushing the car to 65+mph running a 1bbl as it is with the 2bbl... Mileage around town is kind of poor, but would probably be better if I can keep my foot out (love the sound of the slant wound out lol) I cant agree more on getting the correct intake and linkage set-up... Saves alot of hassle and the performance gain is waaay better!

If you get a used carb - make sure the throttle shaft to body play isn't excessive. as excessive slop causes all sorts of idle problems as unmetered air gets drawn in to the engine, causing the idle screws to be backed way out, leading to the car running rich right off idle. There really isn't an easy fix - I've seen people wedge in a stack of O rings, etc - but it's just a hack job. If the throttle shaft rattles around in the carb casting then the carb is shot.

You can buy throttle shaft bushings; check Mikes Carburetors. There are probably other sources around too. I've 'field knurled' a throttle shaft hole to tighten one up when I was in a hurry and it was not critical for long duration.

I kind of figured that adapter game was a fail!

Kickdown & throttle linkage setup is "catch as catch can". If you can't find in a wrecking yard, they tend to go for $90-$100 on eBay these days. I have one setup hanging on my garage wall; send me a PM to buy it.
