I was looking through an Eastwood catalog and they have this machine called a vibratory tumbler that uses dry media to remove rust and crap from old bolts etc. They sell the stuff that goes in it called dry media to clean up the parts. They have rust cutting media and dry shine media. I have an old rock tumbler that still works and I would like to try to use it to clean old parts before I put them back on the car. Any idea what this dry media stuff is and can I use some material that I can find at my local construction supply store or something? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks James. |

I don't know what Eastwood sells, but for cleaning and polishing cartridge cases, shooters use ground up corn cobs or walnut shells. Various compounds can be added. Try www.midwayusa.com and search for media. Or just go to a gun store and ask. |

I can't say for certain what you'd get for tumbling media, but I strongly suspect the "dri-shine" stuff is just crushed walnut shell. I would think you could use any sandblasting media, as well, but you'd have to check it often so as to not damage those small items. I suggest you DO NOT buy the tumbling system from Eastwood......it's over-priced. Check with a few of the mail-order reloader/shooter's supply outlets. You'll be able to find the same thing at a considerably lower price, and many times in a "starter package". Roger |

I have the Eastwood tumbler. The dry shine media looks like ground up coffee in color and size but much harder. I don't know what it is make up of, but they do also sell ground up wanlet shells for their blasting cabinet. Rock polishing compound should work OK if you get a fairly large grit. You might even try regular sand. |

Maybe I am not using the correct media, but i have one of the vibratory machines, and it takes forever to clean carb parts in there. |
