I have ordered the park cover gasket

What I am wondering is does the transmission need to be drained?

If you lift the rear of the car to do the work, you won't lose very much fluid, maybe a quart or two. Use stands under the rear axle and lift it as high as safely possible.
You'll still need a drain pan, but most of it will stay in the converter.
Then just top it off when you're done.
