Post subject:  6 volt wipers in a 12volt car

During a packaging mockup of the cowl area on my 51 DeSoto I encountered the Wiper Box. It includes a very nice condition 6 volt wiper motor/transmission. My seaches for a 12volt version of the same thing have proven fruitless.

Can the wiper be made 12v at an auto electric place?

If I use a resistor or regulator will I be able to use wipe/delay etc?

Is it possible to put my wiper transmission onto some generic 12v wiper motor?

I know about Volta-Drop and all that 50s ceramic resistor stuff. Im hoping for a more modern solution.

You might get some good info by calling and/or writing here, here, here, and here. Looks like '51 might've been the first year for electric wipers in the DeSoto, and perhaps you're fortunate enough that the 12v kit here would fit a '51.

DO NOT USE RESISTORS........

Unless you get the value exactly right, you'll have too much or too few volts.


Then there's the heat............


What's the highest amp draw of the motor?


You can either go with a high-amp DC-DC converter or 12VDC to 120VAC to 6VDC (which is probably easier to do than the DC-DC)

I do believe that the motor could be rewound as a 12V unit and may only require new field coils.

The converter you want is a DC-DC buck converter. If 8 amps will do you can buy one for less than $20.

I'd set it for 7 volts.


It's rated at 100W, so it should do better than 8 amps at 7VDC.....

There are amperage limits as well as power limits.

I've been doing a fair amount of power supply repair at work lately and we use plenty of DC-DC converters. But with as cheap as stuff comes from China, designing and building generally doesn't pay if you can get what you need off the shelf.

I would be hestiant to use a DC-DC converter in a car with an AM radio. If so, I would be prepared to add in some RFI filtering, but even that may not fix it.

Electronics are not my Forte....

It would seem getting the thing rewired for 12volt would be the best long term/least complicated path. New field coils is something I can understand.

Im worried that introducing more electrics to an already compact space might cause some kind of interference.....or big heat. Currently all the Lectrix come from the same source.

The old 6v wiper was clearly audible on the old 6v tube radio.....I would prefer not to hear my 12v wipers on my 12v OEM stereo

I shall embark on a path of finding the correct auto electric old fart. Its likely he will look like me and speak the same language,,,,

Update:

In the end I used a Daytime Running Light thingie my friend Ivan gave me. He gave me 2 .....from Subarus . His view was 55watts lights is kinda same load as 30 w 6v wipers. (he demonstrates this with handwaving)

....doesnt matter.....waited till I was desparate and tried it...presto selecto!

What did notwork was an Empi product for VW 6v wipers (resister 4 ohm)

No way to turn the special 6vmotor to 12v the armature is machined for the worm drive on both ends etc etc

Editors note: At no time did he mention the 2 days of benchwork and an old 6v battery charger to get the old wiper setup to run on 6v....

The solution he suggested is elegant in it's simplicity, and can actually be "seen" with Ohm's law math.
Simply put, two identical loads, connected in series, will share the available voltage equally. If you could have found another 6v motor, rated at 30 watts, and hooked it in series with the wiper motor, both would be safe on 12vdc, as they would share the voltage. In this case, using the lamp can have a dual function. Providing the additional safety of daytime running lights, while giving you the voltage drop you need to safely operate your wipers on 12vdc.

Kudos to your friend. None of us here thought to make that suggestion at all.

What Ivan gave me was a "ballast" for a DRL system. It cuts the voltage to regular lights to 70%.
Its for a 55w system! (more hand waving)

6v wipers are 5 amps @ 7volts or 35w

...at any rate the wipers run at 2 perfect speeds.....and park

Next up wipe delay......

Now that's a clever repurpose of a DRL module! Technically, it's a box that uses PWM to reduce voltage to half -- not 70%. Originally to run the high beams at 10% of their normal full-voltage intensity to provide the daytime running light function. The latest/smartest modules of this type give 6.4v output despite input variance. Simpler/earlier modules just spit out 50% of line (input) voltage.

Lettuce know how it holds up in its new application, eh!

(GTS225, it will not add a DRL function to the car it's now installed in.)

Pulse width modulation. Output is pulsed DC. The amplitude, frequency, and the duration ("width", if it were plotted over time) of the pulses determines the average/effective output voltage. More info here.

3 wires on 12v wiper motor from donor car wiring

3 wires on 6v wiper motor in DeSoto

Can I put a DRL PWM on each of the 3 12v wires and end up with wash/wipe/delay from my tilt colume?

I would use the donor car wiper module ..
