I got a kit from rockauto with all the bearings and other parts for the job.
The shop I took it to think this is all that was wrong with the rear end. He set up the gear runout and backlash, preload and what had to be set.
He has the backlash correct, but I will move on him.
I hope this is clear and I some one will have a ideal what is wrong.

If the backlash is changing he does not have the carrier bearings adjusted tight enough is what it sounds like to me.

Oh- I remember the stock setup on my 63- got rid of it as soon as I could (along with the 9" drums). It has spacer shims on the outsides of the carrier bearing outer races to set backlash & preload. The factory manual has you using the good old "case-spreader" on the axle housing when servicing the diff.

Just a note, I often have variations in backlash readings of .003-.004", it depends on how well that gearset happens to mesh. I measure at 3-4 points on the ring gear & use the smallest reading as my official result. I check several times to make sure it is consistant at those same spots on the gear. If preload is then in spec I go with it.
