Hi guys.

Thanks again for this forum, and thanks to all of you who take their time to help others in need.

I am trying to find out where a tap, tap noise is coming from. I want to inspect the mechanical lifters, but I would like to avoid removing the head. I tried for over one hour to remove one! I got no where. Any Ideas as to how to accomplish this maneuver?

Yes, I adjusted the valves over and over again, put in a new oil pump. Old one was worn, that is why i suspect wear on the lifters.

What year motor? If it is a mid to late '70's with the small plug head you have to remove it.

I really do not know the year of the engine. But I know it's a pre-74 because it has spark plug tubes. I cannot get the lifter out of the bore they are in. I'm using a magnet but can not get the lifter out of it's bore.

Not shocked; lifters often have a bit of varnish 'lip' on them and you need to apply a bit of force to extract them. Get a tool like this one; it is not ideal for this mechnical lifter but you can get the idea; you need a positive mechanical grip pushing outward on the inside of the upper socket. If all else fails, how about some long needle nose pliers to carefully grip the upper lip?

I have used a large "pickup" magnet (8mm X 50 mm head on a flexible tool) and alternately a long needle-nose pliers. The key is to work the lifter up and down, with patience, until the varnish on the bottom head of the lifter breaks away and the lifter can be drawn upward. I would think spraying/soaking from the top (repeatedly) with a penetrating oil would help. Make sure to change your engine oil after this too.
