So my 81 d150 pooped out on me the other day at work. I got it jump started and it died on my way home. Charged the battery and put a new alternator in and it died again a few days later. I have been hooking it up to my charger every night and I am fine most of the day but, but the more I drive it seems to go dead. My alternator belt is tight and I haven't had any other issues recently. My battery is less then a year old and hasn't been sitting around. And hints? Any help would be much appreciated. |

Could be the voltager regulator, the wiring, or a few other issues. Did you have the old alternator tested where you bought the new one? 1st find the voltage regulator, and remove it; it is typically held on with 2 large sheet metal screws. Where the VR case mounts to the chassis is the only electrical ground for the VR. Often the ground gets corrodoed and the charging system stops working. Use an abrasive to clean the chassis where the VR tabs mount and also the back of the VR. Then remount using some bolts and star washers. If you can't get to the back of the chssis there to put on nuts, then run a seprate ground lead from the VR case to chassi or engine block. A good ground on the VR is step numero uno in this type of problem. Also, check the pin inside of the VR connnector to make sure they are not corroded or spread to where they are losing contact. Then check your wires to the alternator for obvious issues like bare, shorted wires or breaks in the wires. Do you have a voltmeter or 12v test light? |

My brothers 75 had same issue, he replaced everthing and it still would not hald a charge. After careful inspection noticed that all the wiring across the fire wall had melted together. Had to rewire the truck under the hood. Dave |
